>> they arrived in coeur d' alene and eagle city in 1884 and he came over from thompson falls montana. he heard about a gold rush. people would find money and gold lying on the ground. everybody was coming from all over the country because of the railroad. they make it display in the papers all over the country about how wonderful the gold rush was and they were trying to build up their clientele and their trains. that was the reason they did that. when he got here it was the worst winter they had since god knows when but it was 30-foot snow drifts and just horrible
weather. he had to walk from thompson falls over the mountains. they came in to eel city in january of 1884. he was famous for the gunfight at the o.k. corral and tombstone arizona where they were gunned down and it was pretty famous. they have made a lot of movies about it the one he got to the camps with that notoriety, people knew him so they voted him to be the sheriff sort of an off-the-cuff thing. in 1882 was when andrew prichard found gold in the coeur d' alene mountains. they weren't mountains i guess but there wasn't much there then. just him and when he went to spokane he let it be known that he had gold and the lunch of guys forced him to go back over there to find the mind and they
couldn't find it again. but there wasn't anything there. there was just countryside than and coeur d' alene there wasn't anything in the city. it was just barely getting started. they had ford sub buys it pretty much trees and tense. the gold rush started in the fall season of 1883 when people started coming over here. they were coming from everywhere. of course in the west there wasn't much here but people coming in and filing claims on property with snow on the ground the people before them filed the same claims but the snow covered their claim markers so other people came in and reclaimed. they finally took it to court and they gave it to the person who had the lowest claim markers
wyatt earp came here as a saloon owner. he owned saloons in deadwood, south dakota. he was the sheriff there but he owned saloons in texas too. the thing about was his forte was being a businessman. what he did was he bought a saloon which was a huge saloon and some other places. that is where some were ramrod it up there. people came from the minds and they had been in the mountains for weeks and they finally found gold. they wanted to spend it than have good times. he owned a couple of mines.
he had people working for him. i'm not sure that he would pin gold and things like that for himself at the owned mines and they say they took him to court a couple of times in the lost one or two cases. there was a pretty good battle. he was the business end of it. he was doing pretty good. he had a lot of people working for him and his wife josie, i am sure that she sang in the local saloons. that is what she was, was a singer. they had a house and their brother had a house and i think you did really well for himself. when he left he must have had a pretty good amount of money with him when he went back down to texas with his girlfriend. he worked in the mines for years and you've always heard the story about wyatt earp coming to coeur d' alene. when i was a kid i used to write stories and things and i started
writing stories about mining and printing them in local newspapers and that sort of thing. they had a column in the local paper for quite a long time. anyhow, that is what made me start writing about wyatt earp. i heard heard the story that he was here people who have built our history, they dealt us and i think it's important to remember our history because if you don't have history, what do you have? there is nothing, just a bunch of people. ..
